IIT’s 'Aryan invasion' theory baffles India’s scientists

IIT Kharagpur’s 'Aryan invasion' theory baffles India’s scientists

The 2022 calendar’s February page says 'the cyclic and non-linear patterns of ‘swastika’ and the arrow of time of the arya rishis are evident in Indus valley seals'
IIT, Kharagpur.

Sections of India’s scientists amused themselves on Monday wondering whether and how to respond to a 2022 calendar produced by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, that seeks to debunk a long-discredited “Aryan invasion” theory.

The calendar with the title “Recovery of the Foundation of Indian Knowledge Systems” features images of Indus Valley Civilisation artefacts, and each calendar month tagged with titles such as “cyclic time and reincarnation”, “law of space-time causation”, and “column of cosmic light and aeons of time”.

Its creators said the calendar provided “twelve evidences” for the “recognition of the secret of the Vedas”, “reinterpretation of the Indus Valley Civilisation”, and “rebuttal of the Aryan invasion myth”.

The calendar’s February page says “the cyclic and non-linear patterns of ‘swastika’ and the arrow of time (forward-future, backward-past) of the arya rishis are also evident in Indus valley seals” and adds, after an explanatory paragraph: “Therefore, the invading Aryans, if any, had nothing to offer to the development of Indian cosmology.”

The April page titled “non-linear flow and changes” — concepts in physics and fluid dynamics — shows Indus Valley seals that the calendar’s creators claim depict flow and says “the invading Aryans, if any, had no idea of these subtle constructs. It fulfils the disapproval of the Aryan invasion myth.”

June is devoted to the unicorn — an image found on Indus Valley seals — which the calendar’s creators say implies that the “evolution of the spinal column of light, a sword from the forehead, was realised by arya sages, as evident in Indus valley iconography”.

Some scientists who received a digital version of the calendar on WhatsApp groups said they were baffled by the content. Others said they were still trying to figure out its content. Some pointed out that multiple scholars have over the decades discredited the Aryan invasion theory.

“Are those who produced the calendar oblivious to all the scholarship on Indology over the past 50 years? The Aryan invasion theory has long been dead,” said Aniket Sule, an astronomer and professor at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai.

Multiple studies based on population genetics have established that India has over several thousands of years experienced multiple waves of migrations into the subcontinent. “Genetically, the Indus Valley and the Vedic people may belong to the same pool, but there were big cultural differences for which there is ample and irrefutable evidence,” Sule said.

Professor Joy Sen, chair of IIT Kharagpur’s centre for excellence in Indian knowledge systems who is credited with “concept and research” on the calendar, said that while the Aryan invasion theory had been debunked, similar ideas continued to be propagated through migration and population genetics studies.

“Through this calendar, we’re challenging the idea that knowledge and information flow was a one-way arrow from outside into India,” Sen said. “We’re challenging the concept of western supremacy over Asian civilisations.”

Scientists puzzling over the calendar said ancient Indian contributions to astronomy and mathematics were well known and recognised across the world and saw no connection between the migrations into the country, the Indus Valley seals, and those contributions.

They said the shared cultural material or language did not necessarily imply identical populations. “In today’s India, if we take a random sample, we won’t find British genetic material, but the influence of the British is seen everywhere in our language and clothing,” Sule said.

Sule and another physicist said the calendar’s content appeared aligned with efforts to promote the grandeur of ancient Indian civilisation, but through certain connections and associations that made little sense and were likely to taint the IIT brand.

“We’re asking ourselves — do we really need to respond to something as ludicrous as this?” Sule said. “But if the scientific community remains silent, there is a risk that the general public will believe such content, and especially so as it is from an IIT.”

Research by South African scientists suggests that Omicron infection enhances neutralising immunity against the Delta variant of the coronavirus.
The study, which has not been peer-reviewed, found that people who were infected with Omicron, especially those who were vaccinated, developed enhanced immunity to the Delta variant.
The analysis enrolled 33 vaccinated and unvaccinated people who were infected with the Omicron variant in South Africa.
While the authors found that the neutralization of Omicron increased 14-fold over 14 days after the enrollment, they also found that there was a 4.4 fold increase of Delta virus neutralization.
"The increase in Delta variant neutralization in individuals infected with Omicron may result in decreased ability of Delta to re-infect those individuals," the scientists said.
Alex Sigal, a professor at the Africa Health Research Institute in South Africa, said on Twitter on Monday that if Omicron was less pathogenic as it looked from the South African experience, "this will help push Delta out".
According to an earlier South African study, there is reduced risk of hospitalisation and severe disease in people infected with the Omicron coronavirus variant compared with the Delta one, though the authors say some of that is likely due to high population immunity.
The Omicron variant, first detected in southern Africa and Hong Kong in November, has since spread worldwide and threatened to overwhelm hospitals and disrupt travel plans this holiday week.

New Delhi:

Singer Shreya Ghoshal has found herself trending on the sidelines of Parag Agrawal's appointment as the new CEO of Twitter. For those wondering, what the connection is between the two - let's just say it is over 10 years old and has something to do with Internet's collective online memory which is elephantine in proportion. Twitter users dug out old exchanges between the singer and the new Twitter CEO. One of the threads is a generic exchange about how they are doing in life. The other one is a tweet from Parag Agrawal that reads: "Nice DP, kya haal chaal hain." More on the old Twitter conversations later. Shreya Ghoshal reacted to the bombardment of tweets and she wrote: "Arre yaar tum log kitna bachpan ka tweets nikaal rahe ho. (You guys are digging out tweets from childhood)." She added, "Twitter had just launched. 10 years pehle! We were kids! Dost ek dusre ko tweet nahi karte kya? Kya time pass chal raha hai yeh ( Do friends not tweet to each other? What is this time pass)?"

Parag Agrawal, an IIT-Bombay graduate, is Twitter's new chief executive officer, replacing founder Jack Dorsey. The 37-year-old joined Twitter in October 2011 as an ads engineer.

Read Shreya Ghoshal's tweet here:

Needless to say, the singer congratulated her friend on his milestone. "Congrats Parag Agrawal. So proud of you! Big day for us, celebrating this news," she tweeted.

Shreya Ghoshal and Parag Agrawal's friendship goes back a long way. Back in 2010, she had requested her fans to wish her "bachpan ka dost" on social media. "Hey all! Found another bachpan ka dost! Foodie and traveller... A Stanford scholar! Follow @paraga. It was his b'day yesterday! Wish him pls." Replying to her post at the time, Parag Agrawal tweeted back: "Aila. You are influential. Followers and Twitter messages flooding in."

Like we said, Internet's collective memory has not forgotten these chats. Here's an example.

Here's another one.

Shreya Ghoshal's discography clearly needs no introduction. She became super popular after she sang tracks for the 2002 hit film Devdas. She sang Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka, Bairi Piya, Chalak Chalak, Morey Piya, and Dola Re Dola in the film. She won a National Film Award, Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer and Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent for these tracks. Shreya is also known for singing Piyu Bole from ParineetaJadu Hai Nasha Hai from Jism, Barso Re from Guru, Ooh La La from The Dirty Picture, Manwa Lage from Happy New Year and Ghar More Pardesiya from KalankParam Sundari from the film Mimi, among others.

She recently sang the track Chaka Chak from Aanand L Rai's film Atrangi Re. The track, featuring Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush, has been composed by AR Rahman and it is trending big time.

Comments Shreya Ghoshal and her husband welcomed their first child, a baby boy, on May 22 and they named him Devyaan. Shreya Ghoshal married Shiladitya Mukhopadhyaya on February 5 in 2015. The duo dated for several years before getting married.

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday posted a selfie with six women MPs on Twitter with a caption:"Who says the Lok Sabha isn't an attractive place to work?", triggering a controversy with many netizens accusing him of sexism.

Tharoor later apologised for offending "some people" and said the "whole selfie thing" was done at the women MPs' initiative in "great good humour and it was they who asked me to tweet it in the same spirit".

"Who says the Lok Sabha isn't an attractive place to work? With six of my fellow MPs this morning," he said and posted a picture of himself with Supriya Sule, Preneet Kaur, Thamizhachi Thangapandian, Mimi Chakraborty, Nusrat Jahan Ruhi and Jyothimani.

His tweet sparked controversy with many accusing him of "sexism" and "objectification".

Reacting sharply, National Commission for Women chairperson Rekha Sharma tweeted, "you are demeaning their contribution in parliament and politics by making them an object of attraction.

Stop objectifying women in parliament".

"Incredible that someone, as exposed to equality discourse, as @ShashiTharoor would attempt to reduce elected political leaders to their looks, and centre himself in the comment to boot. This is 2021, folks, " tweeted Karuna Nandy, a Supreme Court advocate.

Responding to Nandy's tweet, badminton player and Arjuna awardee Jwala Gutta tweeted, "not really Karuna. I think we need to take a few things in a lighter note and not see everything with a magnifying glass. And this was a compliment to all the women in the Parliament which is generally stereotyped!! just my opinion."

Commenting on Tharoor's remark, a Twitter user said, "women in the Lok Sabha are not decorative items meant to make your workspace 'attractive'. They are parliamentarians and you are being disrespectful and sexist."

No man seems to be beyond casual everyday sexism, another netizen said.

After the online backlash, Tharoor tweeted, "the whole selfie thing was done (at the women MPs' initiative) in great good humour & it was they who asked me to tweet it in the same spirit."

"I am sorry some people are offended but I was happy to be roped into this show of workplace camaraderie. That's all this is," the MP from Thiruvananthapuram said.

However, TMC MP Mauhua Moitra defended Tharoor and tweeted "not surprised that a bunch of ugly trolls attacking @ShashiTharoor on a non-issue to detract attention from this non-attractive government's decision to not allow a discussion on the farm act repeal.

The new variant of Covid identified first in South Africa has been named omicron by the World Health Organization on Friday. The variants of SARS-CoV-2 are named after Greek alphabets, but for naming omicron, the experts skipped two letters Nu and Xi and chose omicron instead. In fact, Nu started trending on social media platforms after the news of a new Covid variant came out as Nu was the possible choice for the name of this new variant, which is believed to be more transmissible than the other variants.

Omicron comes next to Nu and Xi, the alphabets WHO experts have cautiously avoided. According to experts, Nu has been avoided as this alphabet is confusing with the English word new. And Xi has been avoided so that the name is not misconstrued as a reference to Chinese premier Xi Jinping.

Paul Nuki, senior editor of the Telegraph shared a quote from a source in WHO who said the alphabets have been deliberately avoided. "Nu had been skipped to avoid confusion with the word new and Xi had been skipped to avoid stigmatising a region," the court read, without mentioning the region.

Vienna brothel offers COVID-19 jabs and free entry

An Austrian brothel has devised an ingenious way to incentivize people to get the coronavirus vaccine — by offering promised patrons a free fling with a prostitute of their choosing if they get immunized at the bordello.

“We are very popular,” Christoph Lielacher, director of the Fun Palast in Vienna, told Reuters of the enticing new initiative, which they created in response to the recent government mandate barring the unvaccinated from restaurants and other indoor areas amid an infection spike last week. The measure — known as 2G — had reportedly caused a 50% dip in the number of clients at the brothel, the Daily Mail reported.

To help stem the financial hemorrhage, Fun Palast is offering the COVID jab every Monday from 4 pm to 10 pm through the end of November. Best of all, men who get inoculated on-site will be gifted a free 30-minute session in the skin merchant’s VIP club with the “lady of their choice.” Think of it as a sexy nurse role-playing scenario but with actual medical care.

“Many men, very many men with a migration background, virtually refuse vaccination or don’t even know that you can be vaccinated,” lamented Fun Palast manager Peter Laskaris. “And since we are actually reaching this target group, we decided to set up a vaccination street here.”

And the cathouse’s inoculation station isn’t just open to lecherous adult men.

Boys as young as 14 are reportedly allowed access to the clinic, provided they have an adult with them, while women are also being encouraged to head to the Fun Palast for a coronavirus shot.

Business has skyrocketed following their clever skin-centive program.

“Since the 2G rule (vaccinated or recovered) has been in place, there has been a real rush to get vaccinated,” said Laskaris. “We have had a lot of people come in today to get vaccinated.”

“I would have gotten vaccinated anyway but the 2G rule has certainly accelerated things a little,” said one satisfied vaccine recipient known only as Gerhard (surname withheld). “And since an acquaintance of mine organized this action I thought: Let’s go for it.”

He added, “I think this is perfectly OK because we can achieve a better immunization rate this way and that’s necessary to end the pandemic at some point.”

The bordello boss Lielacher hopes that the initiative will help the country achieve the 70% to 75% vaccination rate required for herd immunity. Currently, only 63% of Austrians have received the jab, the National News reported.

Fortunately, thanks in part to the new 2G restrictions, doctors have already administered 213,000 coronavirus jabs this week — the highest number since early August, the Local reported.

Fun Palast isn’t the first organization to offer perks for the inoculated. In a much less sexy incentive program on this side of the pond, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf offered state employees five days of paid leave if they got the vaccine at a city-run site.
